The Mission of Christ

January 21, 2007

Texts: Psalm 19; Luke 4:14-21

Theme: The mission of Christ was made clear by Jesus, as recorded in Luke 4.  It consists of the anointing of the Holy Spirit to:

Ø     Bring good news to the poor;

Ø     Proclaim release to the captives;

Ø     Proclaim recovery of sight to the blind;

Ø     Let the oppressed go free;

Ø     Proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

The mission of Christ is the same today and we get to participate in it as his body (church).

Question: How can our mission come to be more like that of Christ?

Outline:

       I.      Get back to basics of Jesus; Read the red letter edition of the New Testament.

    II.      Ask God for help in translating his mission of years ago, to ours today.

 III.      Discuss the mission of Christ in a group setting.

IV.      Commit to making 1 change in your life this year, to reflect Christ’s mission.

   V.      Trust God to lead you and your church.

Today I share with you a story I heard yesterday on a video at the UMM breakfast.  It was a video of a comedian  Ken Davis.

  It seems a rough and tumble biker was on his Harley, stopped at a stop light.  With his full leather black outfit, his worn bandana wrapped around his head, and his souped - up chopper, he was the picture and sound of raw rebellion.  Up beside him came an old man on a moped.  The old man asked the biker if he could look at his bike.  “Go ahead and look,” the biker sneered.  Bending over with his face just inches from the handle bars, the old man asked, “How fast does it go?”  “I’ll show you how fast.”  And with that, the light turned green, the biker took off with a wheelie and brought it up to 200 miles per hour.  In just another moment, he looked in his rear view mirror and saw a dot on the horizon, coming toward him fast.  In another second it was a blur beside him, overtaking him as astronomical speed.  It
